Hey Philip!!!

I am about to buy the shopp plugin for a client of mine but am wondering if you know whether it will work without an SSL certificate for testing purposes?

Basically I think this Plugin is going to be perfect but because I've never used it before I don't want to go to all the expense of getting SSL installed only to find there's one really annoying feature that can't be worked around, if you get my drift?

My hosting company tell me they can install the SSL certificate after the site is setup but the Plugin might not work properly without SSL.  That said they have no experience with the Shopp Plugin – they just mentioned that in case it won't work without it.

I thought I'd ask you in case you know?

Also – do you have any preference for which version of WP to install it on? Shopp's site says 2.6+ but I'm wondering wether to stick with 2.9.2 or go with 3.0?

Yes, the client is going to use one of the gateways that need SSL but that's a great idea to just use Paypal to start with, for testing.

WP3 is looking good too – I have it installed on localhost at present.
